“It was better to be guilty and rich than innocent and poor.”
False Witness by Karin Slaughter, which I recently listened to as an audiobook. The book centers around Lee, a defense lawyer at a big firm in Atlanta who is assigned the case of a man accused of a brutal rape. When she meets the man, she realizes he is the boy she used to babysit as a teenager. The story unfolds with a gripping, cat-and-mouse plot, as Lee’s past comes back to haunt her, with her sister, Cie.
If you know Karin Slaughter, you’re probably familiar with her works. She’s known for her dark, brutal thrillers, and False Witness is no exception. There are graphic descriptions of sexual violence and murder, so it may not be suitable for sensitive readers. As we delve into this book review, we’ll explore the reader’s reactions, the character development, and the synopsis of the false witness. Synopsis of False Witness
False Witness by Karin Slaughter resolves around Lee, a defense lawyer. Her sister, Callie plays a significant role in the story. While Lee has become a successful lawyer, Callie’s life has taken a different path. The book delves into the sister’s relationship and how their lives were profoundly impacted by a traumatic event that occurred 20 years ago. At first, I was hesitant about the book’s focus on the COVID-19 pandemic, as it takes place in 2021. But when the story progressed, I understood why it was crucial to the plot.
Lee thought she had it all figured out as a top defense lawyer. But when she takes on a rape case, her world turns upside down. The accused? Someone from her past who knows way too much. As the trial heats up, Lee feels like she’s walking on eggshells, never sure who’s really the bad guy. Things get even messier when her sister Callie gets involved, bringing up stuff they’ve both tried to forget for years. Slaughter keeps you on the edge of your seat, mixing courtroom action with family drama. It’s the kind of book that’ll make you stay up way too late, flipping pages and wondering what’s really right and wrong.
Book Review of False Witness
There were moments when the False Witness felt incredibly gritty, and I found myself anxious due to the brutal realism of the sexual violence and misogyny depicted. However, the realistic tone made the story even more gripping. The depiction of how women who press charges against their attackers are often put on trial themselves was heartbreaking, but it added to the overall tension and injustice of the narrative.
One character that annoyed me was Lee’s husband. While he’s portrayed as a kind, philanthropic lawyer, there were times his actions felt inconsistent, almost as if they served as a convenient plot device rather than genuine character development. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the book overall and would still rate it four stars. It was a gripping, emotional journey that kept me hooked from start to finish, leaving me with a lingering sense of unease long after the final page.
False Witness Characters
Lee Collier: Successful defense attorney hiding a dark past. Protagonist whose seemingly perfect life is threatened when a rape case connects to her teenage trauma.
Callie Collier: Lee’s sister, struggling more visibly with their shared traumatic history. Her character contrasts Lee’s, highlighting different trauma responses.
The Accused: Lee’s client in a brutal rape case. Purely antagonistic character with ties to Lee’s past, driving the plot’s tension.

Which statement by Karin Slaughter shows a similar central idea?
“I never want it to be titillating or exploitative because these crimes, especially against women, are real and happen every second of the day. I’m mindful of the fact that these are real crimes, and I want to discuss how people recover—or don’t recover—from them.”
